Jim Mills: A Winning Banjo Style

Not many banjo players in bluegrass music have achieved the status of Jim Mills. Through his work with Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, and his two celebrated solo CDs (Bound To Ride and My Dixie Home), Jim has cemented his place among the true greats, being voted Banjo Player Of The Year 4 times by his peers in the IBMA.

Jim teaches 12 songs he has recorded in his straightforward, Scruggsy style, with each carefully demonstrated several times played at both fast and slow speeds. The tunes include a number suitable for new pickers as well as some challenging pieces for more experienced players.

Using a variety of camera angles and close ups, Jim demonstrates the techniques that make up his signature style. Each tune is played with Tim Stafford on guitar, and then broken down lick-for-lick before being shown (fast and slow) in a split screen format. Between the on-screen demos and the printed tab booklet, any banjo player can learn some great tunes and develop some insight into the way this celebrated stylist approaches the instrument.
	We have picked from among Jim’s most requested tunes, and purposely chose a mix to offer material that would be of interest, and within the reach of both intermediate players and skilled pickers alike. Several songs use techniques that even beginners can master, while others will challenge even serious students of the instrument.
Jim teaches seven tunes from his solo projects (How Great Thou Art, Sledd Ridin’, Bear Tracks, Take The D Train, John Henry Blues, Rebecca and Ground Hog) plus two from Team Flathead (Cotton Eyed Joe and Reuben), and three others he recorded with Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder (Shady Grove, Pig In A Pen and Black Eyed Susie).
	One of the chief advantages of the DVD format is the ability to offer alternate angles of the same shot, as we do on the various split screen presentations of the tunes Jim teaches. You can select among three different screen orientations while the DVD is playing, based on whether the left or right hand is of greater interest - or whether seeing them both at equal size would prove more helpful.
